This recital will in small part be an oral lecture on my written dissertation "Discovering India in Western Art Music: An Exploration of Exoticism and Interculturality in works for Western Violin." I seek to explain the change over time of the representation of Indian classical music in Western violin works. I also seek to touch upon, if not a literal connection, then what I see to be an esoteric and spiritual bond between classical Indian and French approaches to music-making.
Program:
I. C. Saint Saens: Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 75
II. W. Kaufmann, arr. P. Venkatesh: Violin and Piano Sonata No. 4
III. S. Korde: Vak, for Solo Violin and Taanpoora (Inspired by
Hindustani Raag, Lalit)
